Philosophy of Counseling

I believe life has a purpose for every individual, even in the midst of our inevitable suffering.  I consider it an honor to go on a journey with my clients to help them discover their true meaning and purposes in life. I hope to foster an environment where clients feel comfortable, cared for, and heard while striving to be genuine, empathetic, warm, and client-centered.

Counseling is meant to be a collaborative process in which counselor and client walk together toward healing and mental wellness. The counseling process changes not only the client but the counselor as well. Therefore, the quality of the therapeutic alliance between counselor and client is the key to successful therapy.  Everyone is unique and deserves to be treated with kindness, compassion, empathy, warmth, and acceptance. I feel it is my job as a counselor to validate your beliefs and challenge them if needed.

Change is brought about by an ongoing review of an individual’s cognitions, thoughts, beliefs, and actions. The client knows the client best and has his or her internal processes to bring about lasting change. Authentic change is brought about by a willingness to recognize pitfalls in our thinking, beliefs, and actions and act accordingly.

Biography

My work with clients focuses on integrating person-centered therapy, CBT, and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). I have obtained Level II Accreditation in DBT from The Association of Psychological Therapies.

I love working with those who have a diagnosis of BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) to help them become the best version of themselves. Society has highly stigmatized BPD, so one of my goals is to bring awareness and education to the diagnosis.

Another focus of mine is grief and loss, particularly child loss. I feel honored when clients share their stories to help their loved one be remembered and memorialized. I am the author of “Grace In The Midst of Grief,” a Biblical journey of healing after losing a child, and I am currently working on the companion study guide “Finding Grace In the Midst of Your Grief.”

As a mom who has fostered and adopted, I also work with individuals or couples on adjustment issues about the various struggles that come with that.

When not caring for clients, I can spend time with my family and my Russian Blue cats, hanging out with friends, working on a puzzle, or painting.

Experience

In addition to being the owner & founder of Counseling Cove PLLC,  I work as an LPC Associate (supervised by Michael Bradford LPC-S) at our Texas location, A PCLC Candidate in our Montana location, an LMHC Associate at our Washington location, and an LPC at our newest Idaho location. I offer life coaching services outside of WA, MT, and TX.

Previously, I was the director of a faith-based homeless shelter. Before that, I was a case manager for the shelter residents, helping them have accountability to work toward self-sufficiency. I have worked with special needs populations in high school and as an adult and have run several small businesses.
